Review

I am a complete sucker still for Vampires.  Sometimes I do tire of them but I always end up back picking another vamp book up.  It kind of amazes me that there are so many and yet they all manage to have their own unique twist.  Bella has come out
with a great debut novel and showed some serious potential.  The writing wasn't over the top but it was enjoyable and I never found myself lost.

The book is told from two different point of view, Derek and Sofia's.  I am such a fn of multiple POV's.  I find it gives more depth to a story.  With this you get to see inside Sophia's worries and Derek's broading attitude.  They were two very different people that helped shape the story.  When Sofia is taken her entire world changes and she has to become more and be more than she ever has before.  Meeting Derek upon his awakening was not ideal but they figured it out.  The two of them have a lot to figure out and a lot to fight for but it seems between the two of them they may just be able to work it out.

Sofia was a character that I was unsure of to start.  When the story starts she is moping over a guy.  That guy may be her best friend and someone she has a crush on but the fact that she had slunk away because of him forgetting her birthday had me worried.  Turns out I was worried for no reason.  I ended up liking her not too long after she was taken to the shade.  Instead of admitting defeat she stood strong and showed compassion and strength for the other girls.  Despite her horrible situation and the fact that escape is not attainable she keeps up hope and takes her position in Derek harem and tries to help the other girls remain comfortable.  Sofia really grows a lot in this book and though at times I found myself irritated with her acceptance of some things she really is easy to like.

The romance and relationship part of this scared the crap out of me when Derek seemed to go all Edward when it came to Sofia.  I can handle an Edward/Bella relationship every now and again but it has become over done for me now.  Fortunately even though Sophia found herself attracted to Derek she didn't fall all over him and wish to become a vampire and live happily ever after.  No she kept her distance and questioned what it was that she felt and why she would feel it.  They developed something as the story went that she at first considered a friendship and then began to consider him and his world home.  A place that she was comfortable.  Derek was a bit more quick to the gun and was possessive like a typical vampire.  Though it did seem that he did wind up genuinely caring about Sophia his instant ability to starve for her and then hold back was a little much.  I did end up kind of falling for him myself but that was near the end and only because some of his actions.

A Shade of Vampire was an evenly paced read that I found myself pulled into easily.  I was actually reading it while waiting for something and found myself done before it was even my turn and before I even realized that I had read that much.  This series shows a lot of potential and I do look forward to seeing where it goes.  There are many ways it can continue after how it ended and a few hopes I have but I guess I will have to wait and see.

Quotes
I never once imagined that my life would play out the way it did.  To be fair, I guess I could say that life never really unfolds the way we expect it to.- Sofia

I couldn't remember ever feeling more beautiful than I did at that momen, and yet, I felt nothing but absolutler dread.  I had a sinister feeling that it was likely not to a young girls advantage to look stunning at The Shade.- Sofia

But I was the preditor.  She was my prey.  And even as I admired her for that ine simple gesture, I was battling to prevent myself from relishing the sweet delicacy she was to my kind.- Derek

She shifted on the bed, her blanket getting tossed to her side, showing a generous amount of skin on her soft legs.  My gut clenched and a swallowed hard.  Nights with Sofia.- Derek

NO matter what alpha male act I might pull off in trying to intimidate her, I knew the truth.  She was no longer mine.  At some point during all those nights I'd spend with her, I'd become hers.

  2. I liked your review. I like vampire stories sometimes, but like you I sometimes tire of them. This one has a different spin with the kidnapping and the stronger female character. Sounds like an quick but enjoyable read.

  4. I actually have this one on my Kindle, ready to read because of all of the fantastic reviews I have been seeing. I wasn't too sure about it at first, because as much as I love vampire books, the great ones seem to be few and far between these days. I am actually looking forward to it even more because of the two POV's. When done right, they add so much depth to a story. So yes, I am looking forward to this one. Thanks for the great review!
